SGM Structural Design Ltd is a Structural Engineering Design Consultancy based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire

The practice is led by Stuart McCormick BEng (Hons) CEng MIStructE*, a fully chartered member of the Institute of Structural Engineers. The practice was established in 2005 and with nearly 30 years of local experience as a structural engineer, Stuart leads the close knit team of qualified Senior and Graduate Engineers with the support of administrative staff. SGM Structural Design has steadily grown over the past 12 years to now employ 8 members of staff forming the multi-disciplined team of experts. This knowledge and experience allows us to offer a wide range of expertise and advice on many types of projects.
We undertake a wide variety of work, including new build schemes and renovation/restoration projects as well as feasibility schemes. We work closely with Architects to achieve aesthetically impressive engineering solutions but also have an innovative approach to design solutions whilst being conscious of cost implications. Some examples of our work are shown in the ‘Gallery’ section.
Our innovative approach to design solutions stood us in good stead when solving design challenges on England’s first passive house and for Stirly Farm Sustainable Barn Conversion which won the regional ‘Construction Excellence in Yorkshire & Humber Legacy Award – Sustainability 2014 Award Winning Team’.
We excel at producing highly detailed drawings which give Builders a clear insight into how structure integrates into the build process. This leads to a more efficient build and no second guessing by the builder which could lead to costly corrections.
Our Structural Reports are undertaken by a fully Chartered Structural Engineer as generally required for Mortgage purposes and the Clients peace of mind.
We offer in house design to latest British Standards and European Codes of Practice for schemes ranging from domestic alterations to multi million pound new builds.

Our Office
In early 2016, SGM Structural Design Ltd moved its offices into the newly renovated Springfield Lodge, 4 Thornhill Road giving us the space to expand and facilities to properly cater to our clients needs including a private meeting room.
The building is Grade II listed and required a careful approach working with Kirklees Conservation in order to meet necessary requirements for the alteration work. With the help of a local Architect we were able to produce the necessary drawings to apply for and be granted planning permission to convert this dwelling into a bespoke office, finished to a high specification.
